The Happy Good Luck Dog

Me (from the kitchen): Honey? Where's the fruit?

Sean (from the living room): What fruit?

Me: The fruit that was in the bowl?
Sean: What bowl?

Me: The fruit bowl! On the cart thingy. There were two pears and two kiwis and I was going to have some with breakfast and now the bowl is empty.

Realization dawns.

Both of us (from the kitchen): [slow clap]

Well played little missy. Well played.

Knitting

I need something to knit. I just can't bring myself to finish that ugly t-shirt sweater. I know, only I can see the flaws, but... I can see the flaws! I need to do so much ripping before I can finish it. So, I'm putting it off until next summer.

Digging around in my knitting basket, I came across this:

raspberrypullover.jpg

It doesn't look like much yet but ... urg... Moon Pie!

mooniehelps.jpg
You have no idea how hard it is to type with nearly 20 lbs. of cat hanging on your arm. (You see, I'm sitting in her chair.)

As I was saying, this is a sweater I started last year about this time, hoping to finish in time for New Year's Eve. New year, same goal. It's a simple raglan, but I've already had a setback because I could not figure out what I was doing with it. Then I guessed, and guessed wrong, and had to rip out some to get back to where I was, then rip out some more because I couldn't figure out where to put the markers back in. It's hard to see the stitches in this ribbon yarn.

Anyway, so now I'm on the right track again. The only thing that could derail me is the fact that I have no pattern, and I'm making it up as I go along. Shyeah! First time designing and doing it off the cuff. What could go wrong?

Lost and Found

This morning we lost Rena.

We were on our morning walk (at 6:00 a.m. when it's dark) and she just dissappeared. We both figured she had taken off over the levee like she usually does. We called and called her, then walked down the levee calling her. She was just gone.

We went home and regrouped, I made a LOST DOG poster and Sean went out to look for her on foot. Just as I was leaving to take the car and drive around and put up posters, I got a call from a woman who found her, walking down the street, one street over from the park.

It seems she just took a right turn out of the park and ended up on the street and then didn't remember how to get back. She's never been on that street before. The woman who found her was someone who loves dogs and knew by looking at Rena that she wasn't some stray. Even though she was on her way to work, and all dressed up, she lured Rena into her car with waffles, and got our number off her tag. I told her Sean was in the park looking for her and at that exact moment, she was stopped at the stop sign in front of the park and Sean was waiting to cross the street. I heard her say "are you looking for a dog?" and then everything was OK again.

Thank you so much nice lady whoever you are!

Relaxing weekend

We've had a relaxing weekend here, just doing a few chores (we fixed the ice maker and the kitchen faucet! wooo hooo!) and taking full advantage of the beautiful weather with long walks by the river with the dogs.

renaspa.jpg
First you run and run and run and run, and then, when you get to the swimmin' spot, you rest.

Yesterday, we took a little side jaunt down an alley off the back of the path and popped out into the nicest little neighborhood. No freeway noise, a nice park with dogs running free and old school playground equipment: metal slides, swings. You just don't see that in public parks anymore. It was like stepping back in time.

Can you see the star in my eye?

Tonight I might actually knit.

A mostly picture post

Could it be a finished sweater?

thriftedsweater.jpg

It could be! But it's not. Found this gem at the trift store last week. It is a commercially made sweater, vintage, Italian, wool/mohair, looks handmade. I thought it was too good to pass up just because I didn't knit it.

Also thrfted, my nearly new, extremely ugly, exceedingly comfortable Cole Haans

thriftedshoe.jpg

I like them, but I haven't been able to bring myself to wear them in public yet. They are soooooo ugly. Great for wearing around the house and taking out the garbage.

Rena says: " I am a gargoyle princess."

Are we in trouble?

And lastly, the reason we have the most popular house in the neighborhood right now:
Pomseeds.jpg
Our pomegranate tree is so spectacular this year. We've had three neighbors ask us for fruit. One offered chocolate in trade, another brought over homemade potstickers, and the third was a neighbor kid (high school age)who made his friends stop the car as they drove by us when we were out walking the dogs so he could ask if he could have some. We told everyone to help themselves! I guess they'll have to fight it out.

We did pick a few for us, and this is the harvest from just one pomegranate! Amazing.

Shawl Thing

So I never did get a picture of the finished shawl thing. The ends are supposed to be sewn together to make a poncho, but I didn't want to always have to wear it closed. I wore it recently to a wedding, and it provided the perfect amount of warmth with a sleeveless dress.

I meant to take a picture that day, the day of the wedding, but just never did. So here's the cactus doing some modelling.

Click to make bigger.

You can see, that even though the four skeins I bought were from the same dye lot, none of them were the same color. Maybe the two I used on either end matched the best. I'm glad I used them on each end. As per usual for me, it's not perfect, but I like it.

It's been awhile

Hellooooooooo!

What's been going on? Nothing and everything.

The last couple of weeks have been busy, but only busy in my brain. I don't handle change very well, and to not have the regularity of a job to go to every day, and getting a new dog, I get mentally busy. Mentally stressed. Even when there is nothing to stress about!

Rena is an absoulute gem and we love her, but she's no Gretsky and we're a bit confounded by dog training. Mostly we just have to keep reminding ourselves that she's only been with us three weeks, and she's doing great when you think about it that way. We had a great walk this morning, and this evening's walk went well too. She came when called more than she didn't. She's really only bad when she gets focused on another dog or a squirrel, and then the intensity of her focus is unbreakable. We're getting there, and we're learning right along with her. I wish there was a place we could take her where she could really run and run and run off leash. She's a joy to watch, and I'm not afraid of her running away. It's other people and dogs I'm worried about. And the rattlesnakes.

portraitofadog.jpg
This is her watching Picabou swim and Sean throw rocks.

bytheriver.jpg
Good dog

So what have I been doing? Not much knitting, and not much excercising that's for sure. I haven't been to my excercise class since we got Rena. It's been beautiful weather here, and we've been going for long walks along the river with the dogs and staying late in the park so Rena can play with the other dogs. There's a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Alobar she gets along with really well. I love to watch them romp and play. He's one of the few dogs that can keep her in check. We've had one incident with Tilly (an Australian Cattle Dog) so we have to keep her on leash when Tilly is around. But Tilly has had a problem with 90% of all the dogs that come to the park (all you dog party people know what I'm talking about), so it's nothing to worry about.

I've been busy working from home for my former boss, who is starting up another company. Most likely by the end of next month I'll have an office to go to again. I'm still working on receiving all my severance from the last company. To date I've gotten 1/6th of it, and am told another "check is in the mail." I'll believe it when I see it. I'm not ruling out a lawsuit in the future.

So far I have lost 7 lbs while working from home just because I'm busy doing stuff all day and am not sitting at my desk eating.

We've been going out a lot to listen to music and that's been really fun. Every Wednesday night, the Americana Ramble with Host Richard March and his band. Last Wednesday was especially good with Michael Fracasso... Go read Sean's myspace for the full review. It's sad that there's such good music on Wednesday nights, but the crowds are so small. On the other hand, it's kind of like our own little party with all the regulars. Tonight we're going to see Devil Makes 3, Mad Cow String Band, and Kate Gaffney

Next Thursday, we're going to see Enter The Haggis. Can't wait. For those who know us that's a hell of a lot of going out for hermits like us.

Super Smartypants

aserieso<br />
ftubes.jpg
"This is the Internets Rena, it's a series of tubes..."

What we have in Rena is a Catahoula Hound. The state dog of Louisiana. Red Leopard variety. Approximately 7 months old. And cute as a button! I took her to the Vet on Friday. Dr. Gates is from Louisiana, and used to have a Catahoula herself. The "cracked glass" eye is also a big give away. (Rena has one eye that has like a white star in the iris, like the white part of the eye dips into the brown of the iris.) Of course she's most likely mixed with some other unknown breed too.

She is super sweet, and excellent in the house. She is very smart and strong willed, so we're working on that. She is just completely attached to Sean and pretty much only listens to him right now. Or doesn't, it depends on her mood.

Really, it's kind of like when you see an extra tall child, and even though she's only 4 years old, you expect more out of her because she looks older? That's the way I feel about Rena. I have to keep reminding myself that she's only been here a week, AND she's only 7 monthls onld.

She knows sit completely and will do it on command. She completely understands the pet door now, after I sat down and explained it to her, and then showed her how she could not only get in the garage, but also get outside to the backyard. Boom done.

The other day I was listening to an audiobook on my laptop, which was sitting on our low coffee table. Rena came up and stared right at the speakers, and then cocked her head, and then looked under the table for the person talking. So cute. She watches everything and you can practically hear the wheels spin in her head.

She loves other dogs and other people and will run up to them, or want to run up to them. She wants to play with every dog. She ran right into the middle of a baseball game that some guys were having in the park and it stopped the whole thing. Every one of them had to come over and pet her and play with her.

renaback.jpg

She likes to have plenty of stuffed toys in her bed. The other night, we had put all the toys away in the toy box. Before she went to bed, she took 5 stuffed toys out of the box and back to the bedroom. Two of them, she gave to Pic, and she but the other three in her bed.

renatoys.jpg

Oh, and in case you were wondering, she's staying. We love her.

KNITTING NEWS ALERT! I have actually finished the shawl poncho thingy. We're going to a wedding this weekend and the dress I'm wearing is sleeveless. I'm always cold, so I really wanted to wear this thing as a wrap. Hopefully it will work. It seems like it will. I have it blocking now, and just need to weave in two more ends.
